1/24/2025Bring Your Own Five Night (Update)

Friday, open gym will be replaced with Bring Your Own Five Night. The competing teams must have all been registered by Thursday, Jan 24th, and the schedules have will be generated Friday morning. The schedules are completely random and were created prior to any teams registered.

Games will be contested using open gym rules:

A.  Teams will be made up of no more than six players.

B.  There will only be substitutions during deadball situations. If any two players are unable to participate in any portion of a game, the game will continue with the remaining players.

C. Player must wear the same color shirt. Teams may not wear the same color as their opponent. It is suggested       that each player bring either a reversible jersey (numbers are not required), or light and dark colored t-shirts.         Home team will wear white or light colors.

D.  Game Length: 8 minutes running clock (10 minutes if        less than 6 teams are registered)

     1. Clock stops on all dead balls in the last minute:

          a. For 15 seconds on dead balls and non shooting fouls.

          b. For 30 seconds shooting fouls and intentional fouls.

     2. Game will continue until the clock expires

E.  Game clock will start at the scheduled time.

F.  The team listed as the home team will start with the ball first. The home team will shoot on the basket to the          right of the score clock.

G.  There will be no officials, so all fouls must be called by the offensive player, and respected by the defensive player. Fouls must be called when they occur, not after the ball has been changed possession.

H. Format: Each team will play 3 or 4 round robin games, then all teams will be seeded in a single elimination bracket. The team that wins the bracket will receive $100 ($150 if there are more than 6 teams registered). Seeding will be based on win/loss record amd the average margin of victory.

5/1/2024Open Gym Rules - Updated (5 on 5 Full Court)

Rules for Open Gym are as follows:

1) Cost - Cost to participate in open gym will be $4 per person. Payment can be made in person or through Cash App ($ExpressAthletics)

2) Sign-up - Sign up occurs when you approach the open gym organizer and request your name be placed on the list and pay the designated fee. You may also sign up prior to your arrival by sending your payment through Cash App ($ExpressAthletics). If you want to sign up multiple players, you must pay for the players at the time of sign up. There will be no exceptions.

3) Start - The first game will start once we have enough players signed up (paid), to begin 5 on 5 full court.

4) Length - Games will last until one of the following have been reached:

                  a) 8 min duration,

                  b) 21 points in 5 on 5 full court

5) Scoring - All made field goals are worth two points, unless shooter of the made field goal began the shot behind the arc. Those are field goals are worth three points.

6) Last Minute - If the score is within one possession (three points or less) the clock will stop on all dead balls. If a shooting foul occurs the clock will stop, and the player fouled will receive two free throws. If the second free throw is missed, either team may rebound the ball and continue play. If an intentional foul occurs the clock will stop, the player fouled will receive one free throw and the offensive team will inbound the ball at half court.

7) Overtime - If the score is tied at the end of regulation one player from each team will shoot one free throw. If only one player makes the free throw, his/her team will be declared the winner. If neither or both make the free throws, then a new player from each team will attempt free throws. The game will continue this way until one player makes a free throw and the other player misses a free throw. If all five players shoot free throws and the score is still tied, both teams must leave the court and sign up at the bottom of the list.

8) Winning Streak - Teams that win three consecutive games must sit down for one game if there are more than two teams waiting to play. If the same team returns to the court and wins three more games and there are two or more teams waiting to play, they must then sign up their team at the bottom of the list.

Open gym is not mandatory! If individuals choose to come play, then I expect them to follow the rules in which I set forth. My objective is to keep basketball going. Open gym is not meant to benefit a small group of players. It’s intended to affect the entire basketball community of El Paso, Las Cruces and Fort Bliss.
